Rouffach

The Rouffach Bailiwick Museum showcases the treasures of the former capital of Haut-Mundat (the Bishop of Strasbourg’s estates in Upper Alsace), as well as the villages that made up its bailiwick (a territory under the authority of the seigneurial bailiff).

History of the museum: The museum was founded by the City of Rouffach in 1960 at the initiative of the Historical and Archaeological Society of the Canton of Rouffach. It is located on the first floor of the former grain market (which had previously housed the local boys’ school), a building constructed in the 16th century and designated a historic monument in 1921. The stone staircase with two converging flights was added in 1924.

The permanent exhibition tour: The first room offers a chronological journey from prehistoric times to the rise of the town of Rouffach in the High Middle Ages. Visitors are then invited into Room 2 to explore two iconic sites of the episcopal city: the former convent and the Récollets Church, and the Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption. One section of this room highlights the Rubiacum project, which brings together some fifteen specialists to study Rouffach’s historic houses.

Another section traces the exceptional career of a native of Rouffach, François-Joseph Lefebvre (1755–1820), Marshal of the Empire and Duke of Danzig under Napoleon.
